Rumors of Meta’s upcoming Pro headset have already been doing the rounds on the Internet. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities who collects intel from his contacts in the supply chain at Apple Asia – has recently made some intriguing claims regarding Meta’s forthcoming headset launch. He claims it will be named the Oculus Quest 2 Pro, which is different from what he said previously about the product being named Oculus Quest 3.
Admittedly, it is quite dubious that Meta is contemplating keeping the Oculus name, after the company’s recent rebranding. Additionally, Kuo claims that the product will feature mini LED panels with a resolution of about 2160x2160p. Which is an upgrade from Quest 2’s 1832×1920 LCD display. Apparently the headset will also have pancake lens that feature compounded dual elements in it’s lens structure that would reduce the optical aberrations during gameplay. That certainly sounds impressive, given it is true.
Last year in October, Meta did speak about launching a “high end” headset in 2022. It is supposedly a more improved version of the Quest 2 and will be quite costly. Codenamed as Project Cambria, the product at the time did not have any of its other technical details revealed. But Kuo’s claims of a new headset launch in the second half of 2022 does coincide with Meta’s launch plans. Along with the fact that Meta intends to integrate pancake lens in its new headset also matches with what Kuo said.
Furthermore, Kuo spoke about the headset having “facial expression recognition” while Meta shared that its product will be incorporating eye and face tracking. Now that similarities burgeon between both parties’ claims on the new product launch late this year, we cannot help but question if both of them are speaking about the same object. And if so, why would Meta only announce one product launch so far? Honestly, the progressing mystery does add to the hype . But we only hope that the new headset, if any, will add an upgraded value to players’ user experience of the virtual world.
